Globally, motorcycle manufacturers are gradually moving toward automatic gears; KTM, Yamaha, Honda, and BMW are just a few of the companies that have already made headway. Ducati, the most recent entry into the league, is developing an automated transmission that will debut with its high-performance motorcycles.

The Italian motorcycle manufacturer is developing a gearbox that may operate fully or semi-automatically, based on the rider’s preference, according to the documents. Similar to the Honda e-clutch technology, it enables the rider to take control at any moment. However, Ducati is investigating a hydraulic system instead of the cable-operated Honda system.

A computer-control unit, an electro-mechanical actuator, a rotating threaded rod, and a ball screw assembly make up the automatic gearbox assembly. Existing Ducati motorcycles can also incorporate these parts. The same parts are being used by Ducati to create two different kinds of gearboxes: one that totally does away with the clutch movement, and another that lets the rider use the clutch if needed. The motorcycles’ automated clutch system, which enables launch control, is another intriguing feature. This implies that the clutch can be used by Ducati’s race cars in the WSBK.

For its high-performance sports bikes, Ducati is working on an automated gearbox that might provide both full and semi-automatic alternatives. This advancement coincides with the shift towards automated gears already made by several motorcycle manufacturers, including BMW, Yamaha, Honda, and KTM. With its automated clutch and foot lever for manual gear shifting, Ducati’s system seems to be a compromise. By automating the clutch and enabling riders to swap gears normally, this could be a “halfway-house” solution.

Recent patent filings show that Ducati is developing motorbike transmission technology. While maintaining manual gear shifting with a foot lever, their new technology seeks to automate clutch operation, providing completely and semi-automatic alternatives. In line with a larger industry trend where manufacturers are increasingly looking at automatic gearbox options, this innovation is mainly aimed for Ducati’s high-performance sports bikes. Improved rider comfort and ease of use, particularly in congested areas or for novice riders, are among the possible advantages, which indicate a development in motorcycle transmission systems.
