JSW MG Motor to Launch 5 New Models by 2025: First CUV Set for Diwali

JSW MG Motor is set to launch five new models by 2025, starting with a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) around Diwali. Known for its pioneering efforts in smart technology and electric vehicles (EVs), MG Motor, now JSW MG Motor, made a bold move by introducing the ZS EV in 2019. Despite a recent downturn in the Indian and global EV markets, the company saw a 21% year-on-year growth in the EV sector in June.

The first new product from JSW MG Motor will be a crossover utility vehicle (CUV), combining the comfort of a sedan with the utility and advantages of an SUV. Packed with features, this intelligent CUV is expected to launch in September or October. However, JSW MG Motor has not yet disclosed whether this crossover will be an EV or have an internal combustion engine. Currently, the automaker is testing the Cloud EV, marketed in China under the Wuling brand, a subsidiary of JSW MG Motor’s parent company SAIC. The Cloud EV measures 4,295 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,652 mm in height, with a claimed range of up to 460 km on a single charge.

Regarding incentives, recent policy changes, such as Uttar Pradesh waiving the registration tax on hybrid vehicles priced below Rs 20 lakh, is sparking debate on reducing the GST rate for hybrid vehicles from 43%. The Finance Ministry has not yet made an official statement, and the uncertainty surrounding potential changes by the budget presentation on July 23rd. Innovative policymaking is needed, suggesting that GST rates should be determined by vehicles’ tailpipe emissions, covering a range of options from EVs and strong hybrids, including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), to mild hybrids, biofuels, and CNG. Chaba pointed out that currently, no PHEVs are available in India.

JSW MG Motor’s future plans include launching new vehicles and expanding its production capabilities. The company is focusing on its new Halol facility in Gujarat, aiming to produce 300,000 units annually. The capacity will be increasing to 300,000 units per year, starting with a CUV set for a Diwali release. The EV market will grow steadily, with 93,000 units sold last year and an expected increase to 120,000 this year. JSW MG Motor consistently sells around 1,000 EV units, including the Comet and ZS EV, with prices ranging from below ₹10 lakh for the Comet to above ₹20 lakh for the ZS EV.
