MG Motor has unveiled the second-generation HS SUV at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. The new MG HS, which is slightly longer and wider than its predecessor, brings a fresh design, enhanced technology, improved safety features, and two powertrain options to the table.
Powertrain Options
The new MG HS offers two powertrain choices. The standard petrol engine has been slightly enhanced to produce 170hp. However, the most notable change is in the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant. The electric motor in the PHEV now generates 209hp, a significant increase from the previous 123hp, leading to an estimated combined output exceeding 300hp. This makes the new HS PHEV a much more powerful and efficient option.
The battery capacity for the PHEV has been increased to 24.7kWh, offering a claimed electric-only range of approximately 120km. This improvement in battery size not only extends the driving range but also attracts a benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax rate of just 5 percent, providing considerable fuel savings. However, MG has yet to release specific consumption figures for this model.
Design and Dimensions
In terms of design, the new MG HS is 14mm wider and 26mm longer than the first-generation model. The wheelbase has been extended by 30mm, now measuring 2,750mm, offering more interior space. Despite the increased dimensions, the sleeker roofline lowers the overall height by 30mm, creating a more athletic and streamlined silhouette. This design approach aims to combine practicality with a sportier look.
Interior Features
Inside, the new HS features an all-black theme with contrasting red stitching on the seats and dashboard, enhancing the premium feel. All variants come with a comprehensive list of standard features, including a rear parking camera, keyless entry, and a six-way adjustable driver’s seat. Additionally, the HS is equipped with dual 12.3-inch screens that support smartphone mirroring, improved switchgear, and upgraded material quality. The interior also benefits from increased space, with the boot capacity now 44 litres larger, totaling 507 litres.
Future in India
Regarding its potential entry into the Indian market, MG Motor India has recently partnered with JSW and is preparing to launch several new cars and SUVs in the coming months. This year, India is expected to see the launch of the Cloud EV and the Gloster facelift. While it has not been officially confirmed, the new HS could be among the models introduced to the Indian market. If it does arrive, the HS is expected to be positioned above the Hector and below the Gloster in MG’s lineup.
The second-generation MG HS SUV offers significant improvements in power, design, and technology. With its enhanced PHEV variant, more spacious interior, and a slew of standard features, the new HS is set to make a strong impression in the SUV market. Its potential introduction to India could further strengthen MG’s presence in the country, offering consumers a compelling new option in the SUV segment.
