MG Motor has made a significant splash at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show with the unveiling of the new MG3 hatchback, signalling a bold move forward for the Chinese-owned British brand. Positioned as a rival to the Hyundai i20 in international markets, the hatchback is slated for launch in Europe initially, with plans for expansion into other regions in the near future.
Revolutionizing Design with Hybrid Power
The second generation of the MG3 introduces a refreshed design and marks the introduction of petrol-hybrid powertrains to the lineup. Competing with renowned models such as the Renault Clio, Hyundai i20, Toyota Yaris, and Honda Jazz, the new MG3 emphasizes practicality, efficiency, and performance. This unveiling aligns with MG”s ambitious strategy to introduce over 20 new models globally within the next three years, half of which will be new-energy vehicles.
Crafted in MG”s Shanghai design studio, the new MG3 draws inspiration from the brand”s existing range of crossovers and hatchbacks. It boasts slightly larger dimensions in both length and width compared to its purely internal combustion engine (ICE) predecessor, signalling a notable evolution in MG”s design philosophy.
Hybrid Plus Powertrain – A Milestone for MG
A standout feature of the new MG3 is its Hybrid Plus powertrain, marking MG”s debut in the non-plug-in hybrid segment. This innovative system combines a 102hp, 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 108hp electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 195hp. Not only does this make the MG3 more potent than its competitors, but it also enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100kph in just 8.0 seconds.
Unlike its predecessor, which offered a 5-speed automated manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox, the new MG3 comes equipped with a 3-speed automatic transmission at launch, with a manual version expected later. MG highlights the advantages of this transmission system over the commonly used Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in hybrids, citing more responsive acceleration without typical lag.
Driving Modes and Battery Efficiency
Equipped with a 1.83kWh battery, the MG3 can cover short distances solely on electric power. The vehicle offers Series mode, where the engine acts as a generator, or Parallel mode, combining both power sources for maximum output.
Interior Comfort and Cutting-Edge Technology
Inside the cabin, the MG3 receives a modern overhaul with “floating” twin screens—a 7.0-inch driver”s display and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen—delivering improved responsiveness and updated graphics. Packed with a comprehensive array of features and safety technologies, the MG3 competes favourably with its counterparts.
MG”s Presence in India
While the MG3 hatch made its debut at Auto Expo 2020 in India, there has been no official confirmation regarding its launch in the country. Currently, MG Motor India”s lineup includes models like the Astor, Hector, Gloster, along with the Comet EV and ZS EV SUVs. The company is gearing up for the market launch of the Gloster facelift later this year, further solidifying its presence in the Indian market.
