Maruti has announced prices for the new Swift CNG, four months after launching the petrol hatchback. Prices for the Swift CNG start from Rs 8.20 lakh (ex-showroom), and it is available in three trims – VXi, VXi (O) and ZXi variants. The Swift CNG is Maruti Suzuki’s fourteenth CNG powered vehicle for the Indian market.
Swift CNG is popular because it offers six percent more fuel efficient than older model. Maruti has sold close to 67,000 new Swift units since launch which shows its popularity. The Swift CNG costs Rs 90,000 more than an equivalent petrol variant.
The new Z-series engine specs
The new Z12E petrol engine gets the CNG treatment for the first time that delivers a healthy 32.85km/kg (ARAI rated) which is six percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing Swift CNG which was powered by the 1.2-litre K-series engine. As before, the Swift CNG is only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
With CNG, the engine produces 69.75hp and 101.8Nm of torque which is marginally higher on the new model. Like its petrol counterpart, the CNG variants also see a drop in power output from the previous generation model that produced 77hp.
The CNG tank setup on the Swift continues to be a single large cylinder in the boot, and not the innovative twin-cylinder setup seen on newer Hyundai and Tata models. Following the emission norm, the new Swift CNG’s Co2 levels are also down by six percent compared to the previous car.
Design and features
The entry-level Swift CNG VXi gets features like six airbags, ESC, remote central locking, halogen projector headlamps, 14-inch steel wheels and power windows. The mid-level Swift VXi (O) adds a height adjustable driver’s seat, a 7-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and steering mounted controls, among other.
The top most model Swift ZXi gets a CNG-powered variant for the first time, and comes loaded with features like a LED projector headlamps with DRLs, 15-inch alloy wheels, wireless charging, automatic climate control and a rear washer wiper. This new high-spec variant has been introduced as customers have been asking for a well-equipped hatchback with a factory fitted CNG kit.
Maruti has been the biggest carmaker with CNG powered models in India and is targeting yearly sales for six lakh CNG powered passenger cars and SUVs. Last year, it sold around 4.77 lakh CNG cars in India. From April to August 2024, Maruti has sold 2.21 lakh CNG cars, SUVs in our market.
For Swift, the earlier-gen car saw 15 percent sales coming from the CNG-powered models. Maruti is expecting an increased demand for the new Swift CNG, thanks to higher fuel economy and a wider price band. Deliveries for the new Swift CNG will commence by this weekend in Gujarat first and in other states. The key markets continues to remain in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi for CNG model sales. This is followed by the states of Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.
