Tata Motors’ Nexon CNG, introduced as a concept in the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2024, is set to be launched following the introduction of the Curvv coupe SUVs petrol and diesel versions on September 2. The vehicle will be equipped with two gearbox options, including an AMT gearbox, and will be India’s first turbo-CNG vehicle.
Despite being showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the car model will have an AMT automatic gearbox and is expected to be one of the most powerful CNG vehicles in the segment.

The Nexon CNG will come with a 1.2-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine and will be the third Tata product after Tigor and Tiago to offer a CNG-AMT combination. Nexon CNG’s interiors and exteriors would be identical to the standard SUV. However, it is expected to have a few CNG-related mechanical upgrades to the suspension, along with a couple of iCNG badges to distinguish it. It is expected to be launched around Rs 9 lakh. The CNG vehicle will be offered with a unique twin 60-litre CNG tank and a usable boot space of 230 litres.
The Nexon will be the brand’s second diesel SUV to get the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This adds to the compact SUV’s existing diesel line-up, which already includes an AMT option.
The Nexon diesel currently gets Tata’s 1.5-litre Revotorq engine with 115-hp, paired with an AMT or a 6-speed manual. The new diesel-DCA combination, which debuted on the Curvv, gets the more powerful 118-hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine dubbed “Kryojet.” This engine may also be offered on the Nexon diesel-DCA and could be positioned at the top of the already vast Nexon line-up. Tata Motors might add a panoramic sunroof on this new variant, as suggested by a spy shot that surfaced online a few months ago. We expect the diesel-DCA will be available at least on the Nexon Fearless trim upon launch.
Once the Nexon DCA hits showrooms, the Nexon diesel will likely have two engine options (the existing Revotorq and the new Kryotec) and as many as four gearbox choices: two manuals and two automatics.

The Nexon CNG gets a single ECU, which seamlessly changes from CNG to petrol mode without any lag, and the vehicle can be directly started in CNG mode. The Nexon will come equipped with an NGV1 type of nozzle so that the refuelling process is faster.
The Nexon will be the only SUV in its segment to offer various powertrain options like CNG, pure petrol, diesel, and EV. Tata Motors was the first company to introduce the twin-cylinder CNG tank with a 60-litre capacity, a feature that is now available from Hyundai. Replete with such features, the Nexon CNG will compete with the CNG variant of Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
