The Tata Nexon ranks among the top ten best-selling vehicles in the first half of 2024, and the Indian automobile manufacturer is all set to expand its offerings by introducing a CNG variant. Tata Motors is anticipated to launch the Nexon iCNG in September, which will position it as the most versatile compact SUV on the market, available in petrol, diesel, all-electric, and now CNG options.
The Tata Nexon continues to be a top contender in the Indian automotive market and is set to further diversify its lineup with the introduction of the Nexon iCNG, expected to launch in September. Showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024, the Nexon CNG will be India’s first turbo petrol CNG vehicle, equipped with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol Revotron engine and a five-speed manual transmission.
Tata Nexon CNG: What to expect?
The Nexon will be the first turbo petrol CNG vehicle in India. It will be powered by the 1.2-litre turbo petrol Revotron engine though the output will be less than its internal combustion engine sibling. It is still expected to be one of the most powerful CNG vehicles in the segment. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, but an AMT is on the cards as the Tiago and Tigor offer this automatic gearbox.
The Tata Nexon iCNG, with its innovative twin-cylinder CNG tank and seamless fuel switching capabilities, is set to redefine the compact SUV segment. Its competitive edge against rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza highlights Tata’s commitment to versatility and innovation.
With a single ECU, the vehicle will seamlessly switch between CNG to petrol and vice-versa. The Nexon can also be directly started in CNG mode and has the function to switch automatically from one fuel to another. According to Tata Motors, the Nexon will come equipped with an NGV1 type of nozzle to make sure refuelling is faster.
Tata Nexon CNG: Twin-cylinder tank
Tata Motors was the first company to introduce the twin-cylinder CNG tank, a feature that is now available from Hyundai. These twin-cylinder tanks boast a 60-litre capacity. Owing to their distinctive design, they allow the Nexon to offer an estimated boot space of 230 litres. The Nexon CNG is set to compete with the Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
