Telangana has joined Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Maharashtra in providing incentives to encourage the use of EVs. Road tax and registration duties are completely waived when an electric car is purchased, according to the state minister for transportation and BC welfare.
The ‘Telangana Electric Vehicle & Energy Storage Policy 2020-2030’, announced by Minister of Transportation will be implemented with the goal of promoting electric vehicles in the state. The Minister gave an overview of the new policy, stating that all EV cars registered and bought in Telangana would no longer be required to pay registration costs. According to him, GO 41’s new policy will go into force.
In an effort to lessen air pollution in the state capital of Hyderabad, the exemption will be extended to electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers as well as commercial vehicles including buses, tractors, light goods carriers, taxis, and three-wheelers. For the duration of their lives, EVs utilised by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation and e-buses used to transport private workers would be completely free from road tax and registration payments.

New EVs sold up to December 31, 2026, will be exempt, regardless of the quantity sold. In order to facilitate the adoption of EVs, the minister added, a commensurate expansion of the infrastructure for charging EVs is necessary. The decision to eliminate the road tax and registration fee should increase the number of electric vehicles sold in the state. The introduction of a road tax and registration fee waiver for hybrid vehicles is being considered by governments such as Karnataka, which provides incentives to EV manufacturers but not to customers directly. This was previously implemented in Uttar Pradesh, and according to some dealers, sales of hybrid cars have skyrocketed.
Telangana’s adoption of the ‘Electric Vehicle & Energy Storage Policy 2020-2030’ marks a significant step toward sustainable transportation. By waiving road tax and registration fees for EVs, the state is incentivizing adoption across various vehicle categories, aiming to reduce air pollution in Hyderabad and beyond. The policy, effective until December 2026, promises to boost EV sales and push for enhanced charging infrastructure. As other states consider similar initiatives, Telangana sets a strong precedent for promoting green mobility and fostering a cleaner, eco-friendly future.
