The Prime Minister has flagged off India”s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in Ghaziabad. With this, an integrated commuter railway network between the National Capital Region and Delhi is set to become a reality. The first stretch of the network in Ghaziabad will start operations on Saturday.
Here are 10 significant points regarding the project:
1. The Regional Rapid Transit System is a high-speed rail-based commuter transit service.
2. It offers high-speed, reliable, point-to-point regional travel through dedicated pathways.
3. It holds features of both metros and conventional railways as it caters to regional passengers who take longer distances with fewer stops and ensures high speed and reliability.
4. This faster alternative transport system helps Delhi-like cities lower traffic and thus pollution.
5. A total of eight RRTS corridors have been planned around the national capital.
6. Ghaziabad-Meerut, Gurugram-Rewari-Alwar, and Sonipat-Panipat have been prioritized for phase-1.
7. Other routes include Faridabad-Ballabgarh-Palwal, Bahadurgarh-Rohtak, Shahdara-Baraut, Ghaziabad-Khurja, and Ghaziabad-Hapur.
8. A 17-kilometer distance between two locations can be covered in just 12 minutes with RRTS. Whereas, by road it would take 30-35 minutes.
9. Passengers will have comfortable seating with air-conditioning.
10. The train can rev up to a speed of 160 kmph.
