Container Ship Collision Sparks Chaos At Evyap Port, Istanbul

Edited by Dileep Kumar S

A chaotic scene unfolded at Turkey’s Evyap Port, east of Istanbul, as a Hong Kong-flagged container ship, operated by the Taiwanese Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, triggered a major accident on Saturday (March 16).

The 368-meter-long vessel, known as the YM Witness, was captured in video footage approaching the docking area at an alarming angle, where four towering cranes awaited to unload shipping containers. In a misjudged maneuver, the YM Witness collided with one of the cranes upon docking, resulting in the toppling of three out of four cranes.

Report from the Maritime Executive reveals that at least one individual operating a crane sustained serious injuries during the incident, while numerous cargo containers were sent crashing into the water.

Emergency responders, including police and firefighters, rushed to the scene to provide assistance and initiate investigations into the mishap. The Yang Ming Shipping Corporation, the vessel’s owner, is expected to bear financial responsibility for the damages incurred by the YM Witness.

Operating along the company’s MD3 eastbound Mediterranean shipping route, the vessel’s accident may cause disruptions to businesses relying on timely merchandise deliveries. The Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has assured that impacted businesses will be promptly contacted to address potential delays stemming from the incident, as reported by UDN.
