The Indian Income Tax (IT) Department officials visited personal computer maker Lenovo’s factory situated at Gurugram and Bengaluru as part of a probe on tax evasion. During the visit, the income tax officials inspected the laptops of the employees, reported the TOI.
Lenovo which is a Chinese Personal Computer maker, has confirmed the visit of the IT officials at its premises and said that the company was “co-operating with the authorities and will provide all possible support required.” Lenovo also said, “we adhere strictly to all applicable laws, regulations, and reporting requirements in every jurisdiction in which we do business,” reported the Reuters.
Lenovo has a leading of 24% share in the personal computer market globally. In 2022-2023, the company had earned a revenue of USD1.9 billion in India which adds to 17% market share in the country, said the TOI.
Lenovo was founded in 1984 in Beijing, China and entered the Indian markets in 2005. The company is a maker of PCs and tablets, monitors, accessories, smartphones, smart home and smart collaboration solutions, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), commercial Internet of Things (IoT), software, services, and smart infrastructure data center solutions around the world. It has a presence in more than 180 markets, including countries – Argentina, Brazil, China, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Mexico, and USA, where the company has its own facilities and contract facilities, its website said.
The tax officials also visited Lenovo’s factory at Puducherry, said the Reuters. The visit, sources said was to collaborate evidence upon the suspicion of tax evasion. Earlier, the tax officials had also paid a visit to the facilities of contract manufacturer Flex Ltd, situated at Tamil Nadu state.
