Dr Devi Shetty, an Indian entrepreneur and cardiac surgeon has begun his own insurance company under his hospital chain Narayana Health in the name, “Aditi Insurance”. They sought a license from IRDAI. The insurance package offers full family coverage of Rs 1 crore for surgeries and Rs 5 lakh for treatment costs in a premium annual package of Rs 10000 across their Narayana Health network hospitals in India.
Aditi will be initially launched as a pilot project around Mysuru, It will also be boomed into Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka, and it aims to roll out nationwide further expanding the chain to its 21 hospitals and clinics across the country.
Dr Shetty aims to avert the typical system of linking hospitals, insurance and patients and tries to eliminate the focus on profits between the two parties. It will help common people to afford the annual payment making the insurance package comprehensive and inexpensive. Since there is no third party in this, people will be free to communicate with the hospital entities and ponder on their health conditions and speedy recovery. Narayana Health Network would take responsibility for processing the claim settlement with less paperwork and formalities to avoid further kerfuffle.
“Aditi”
insurance scheme is designed to protect families keeping them away from medical expenses and bestowing them peace of mind as they are already combating the disease. The plan will venture as an anchor to make a quality healthcare system accessible for everyone in this country, Dr. Shetty stated on Monday. Those who are insured under this Aditi scheme can also make use of the discount rates on medical check-ups and other tests, he added.
He pointed out that the lack of quality healthcare in India has been a major problem and free healthcare has worked in small countries with not crossing 10 million people as they spent 20% of the GDP ratio on healthcare. In India, only 2% is spent on health and that’s a very crucial thing to look at, Dr. Shetty raised concerns. He said that if the government plans to offer high-end surgery for all people in the country taking it as a national strategy, there might occur a massive shift in the public healthcare system in India.
Dr Devi Shetty owns a chain of 21 medical centres in India, He has performed more than 100,000 heart operations and in the year 2004, he was awarded the Padma Shri, followed by the Padma Bhushan in 2012 for his valuable contributions to affordable healthcare. Currently, he is working on the expansion of his hospital chain in Kolkata.
