New Delhi: Dr. Bibek Debroy, the renowned Indian economist and author died at the age of 69 on Friday. He was a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award and served as the chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council since 2017. Debroy was a highly respected figure in the field of economics who was known for his extensive contributions to economic policy and research in India.
Debroy had a notable career that spanned various prestigious roles including being a member of NITI Aayog from its inception in January 2015 until June 2019.
He also served as a consulting editor for several leading financial publications in India. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Padma Shri award in 2015 which is one of India’s highest civilian honours.
Some of his monumental works include a comprehensive ten-volume translation of the Mahabharata which received praise and recognition for its clarity and accessibility.
He also served as the Finance Ministry’s Expert Committee for Infrastructure Classification and Financing Framework for Amrit Kaal.
Debroy made major contributions to game theory, economic theory, income and social inequalities, poverty, law reforms, railway reforms, and Indology, among others.
Recently, he stepped down as chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune after the Bombay High Court granted interim relief to Vice-Chancellor Ajit Ranade who had previously been dismissed from his position.

Following his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared condolences over a mourning note on the X platform, he wrote: “Dr Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth.”
