Union Finance Ministry Nirmala Sitharaman presented the third term Modi government’s Budget today. Beginning by stressing the focus of the budget on employment, poor, women youth and farmers, the Finance Minister said that nine priorities are identified for the latest Budgets – agriculture, employment, social justice, manufacturing, urban development, energy, infrastructure, research and development, and next-generation reforms.
This article highlights the allocations made for social schemes in the 2024 Budget. One of the social security scheme, PM Awas Yojana-Urban has been given a boost vowing the fulfilment of housing needs of 1 crore people. The minister added that the housing needs will be addressed with an investment of Rs 10 lakh crores. The assistance also includes the central allocation of Rs 2.2 lakh crores in the next five years.

In addition, the government would facilitate dormitory-type rental housing for industrial workers in PPP mode as announced by the finance minister in the Parliament.
As part of social schemes, the Budget has announced free electricity up to 300 units per month for one crore households under solar panel scheme. The scheme for rooftop solar panels would enable one crore households to use electricity free of cost up to 300 units per month. The Finance Minister pointed out PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, noting that it was launched to install rooftop solar panels, and said that the scheme will further encourage the rooftop solar system.
