Kochi, Kerala: Recently, angry Swiggy delivery person expressed discontent towards top management and shopping malls for their unfair practices which making the job burdensome. Not disclosing the name, the agent said, “Swiggy is tricking the riders most, not customers. The platform is going to develop through delivery partners money.” He spoke to Timeline Daily about the bad attitude of the shopping mall authorities, and alleged exploitative work practices.

The delivery worker claimed that though many among them is earning Rs. 70k to Rs. 80k  per month they have been treating like second-rate citizens in some places, especially in Oberon Mall. “We are not slave . . . comes from good, respectable family,” the agent said.

Lulu Mall is not providing space for riders to park vehicles without paying platform fee. “Lulu Mall is a looter”, he said. If it is hypermarket delivery, Mall allow the delivery partners to park their vehicle, otherwise, even if they are collecting delivery items from the Mall itself they are asked to give parking fee. Due to this, the rider is leaving the vehicle beside roads and, in some cases walk for longer distances to collect food. At the same time, delivery workers have to supply items at the doorstep of the customer as well, he said. The delivery agent said that he started asking parking fee from the customers itself.

He further explained the exploitation on the part of the online food ordering giant. Earlier the platform used to include first mile pay, i.e., the travel distance between agent’s location to the restaurant location. But now they are covering only Last Mile, i.e., from restaurant to the delivery location. In addition, the payment criteria does not cover fuel prices, and vehicle maintenance. The delivery partner expressed anger at the low base pay, and low incentives.

The management is changing the rules and regulation according to their whims, agent said. Even if they deliver Rs. 2500 bulk order, which they find it difficult carry in their delivery bag, were not given proper incentive.

Regarding incentives, the delivery agent also said, “If we complete 35 orders a day, we are eligible to receive Rs. 240 as incentive, but to receive that we are made to wait for orders even after their daily allotted timings.” The new scheme were introduced rapidly where delivery workers incentives are being slashed. The erstwhile incentive structure gave them Rs.4500 as weekly bonus itself, now the maximum is Rs. 400, the agent added.
