Assam Exam Board Class 10 Question On Free Treatment Exclusively To Hindus Stirs Controversy

A controversy has erupted on social media regarding an alleged divisive question from a Class 10 High School Leaving Examination (HSLE) held by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA).

To the people’s surprise, the state exam board’s Social Science paper posed a question to students seeking their views on government hospitals offering free treatment exclusively to Hindus while making people of other religions to pay for the medical services.

The bizarre question has stirred up a huge social media uproar, demanding accountability from the Assam government and the education department.

The question paper, widely shared on social media platforms, asks students to suppose that the government has set up a hospital in a village called Dambuk, and the hospital provides free treatment to the Hindus. The question then adds that people of other religions have to bear the cost of treatment themselves, seeking candidates’ opinion on such government measures in “a country like India.”

Many users are shocked about the kind of question, pointing out how students are exposed to “divisive hypotheticals” in the education institutions, which are supposed to be key players in fostering inclusive values.

A user, Afrida Hussain, asked if this is the kind of education we want for our students. “A Class 10 board exam question by SEBA asks whether the government can set up a hospital providing free treatment only to Hindus while others have to pay. Seriously? Why are students being exposed to divisive hypotheticals instead of learning about the equality and secularism protected by our Constitution?” the user wrote on X.

Many demanded the Supreme Court take cognizance of the divisive-minded question and take strict action against those behind it. While calling the incident shameful and dangerous, many users demanded clarification from the Assam government and Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sharma.

Notably, some users have played down the divisive nature of the question, asking what the problem is with it. They argue to let students use their reason, as it is part of critical thinking, and the answer is just a ‘No’ to the question.
