IIT Bombay's DSSE Is Driving Innovation And Entrepreneurship For the Next Generation

The Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship (DSSE) at IIT Bombay hosted a day-long symposium on January 31, 2025, “Catalyzing University Entrepreneurship,” with distinguished luminaries focusing on the role of academic institutions in driving innovation and fostering entrepreneurship.

DSSE, as a pioneering entrepreneurship school, has been training aspiring entrepreneurs through academic and pre-incubation programs and building the talent pipeline for the nation. Since its inception, DSSE’s entrepreneurship courses have benefited more than 4,300 students, and over 950 students have been mentored by the faculty and alumni, close to 340 venture teams formed, and over 100 startups registered by DSSE students.

A new and upcoming 1,15,000 sq. ft. facility at the IIT Bombay campus will serve as a hub for students at every stage of their entrepreneurial journeys, from undergraduates to PhDs, and includes space for alumni, faculty members, and staff.

Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, shared, “IIT Bombay has always been at the forefront of innovation. With the Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship, we are proud to impart academic excellence and equip our students with the mindset and skills to become successful entrepreneurs.”

Bharat Desai shared “IIT Bombay has the expertise and the convening power to bring together the best minds in entrepreneurship and innovation. The new building will cater to the educational and research needs of the IIT Bombay community and foster extensive community connections to the business industry. Our hope is that the building is bustling with student activity, mentorship, and research, where the ‘lab to market’ concept truly takes shape and helps grow commercialization.”

The symposium included a keynote address by Dr. Abhay Jere, Vice-chairman, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Chief Innovation Officer, Ministry of Education, on “Vision for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.” The event also featured topics on entrepreneurship education & research and translational research & commercialization, with distinguished thought leaders from government, academia, and industry, along with entrepreneurs, investors, and incubators, gathered to discuss best practices and strategies for creating an ecosystem that encourages startup ventures.

Prof. Ravindra Gudi, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Bombay, shared, “The contributions of Bharat Desai and Neerja Sethi demonstrate the power of alumni engagement in driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and lasting impact, all aligned with the Institute’s broader mission.”

The DSSE Building at IIT Bombay, set to become operational later this year, will feature a state-of-the-art makerspace, designed to nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs and startup technologies, alongside key spaces like Design Thinking Studio, Co-working Labs, Thematic Labs, Tinkerers’ Lab & Proof-of-Concept Lab, and Manufacturing/Heavy Equipment Labs.
