IIT Delhi Rises to 26th in QS World Rankings for Engineering
IIT Delhi has achieved a significant milestone in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, securing the 26th position globally in Engineering & Technology, a remarkable improvement from last year’s 45th rank. The institute has also emerged as India’s top-ranked institution in this category, further solidifying its global reputation in technical education and research.
The rankings, announced on March 12, 2025, place IIT Delhi among the top 100 institutions worldwide in 12 specific subjects across Engineering, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Key rankings include Computer Science & Information Systems (64), Electrical Engineering (47), Mechanical Engineering (61), and Business & Management Studies (92). In the Natural Sciences category, IIT Delhi secured 146th place, while in Social Sciences & Management, it ranked 75th globally.
Prof. Vivek Buwa, Head of the Ranking Cell and Dean of Planning, highlighted the factors contributing to the institute’s rise, stating, “The QS World University Subject Ranking 2025 for Engineering & Technology is based on five key parameters: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (30%), citations (10%), H-index (10%), and international research network (10%). This year, IIT Delhi has improved its score across all five parameters, with a significant boost in employer reputation and international research collaborations.”
He attributed this success to IIT Delhi’s expanding global partnerships. Since being designated an Institute of Eminence (IoE) in 2018, the institute has undertaken 410 international collaborative research projects with top universities. This includes 139 projects funded under IIT Delhi’s joint seed funding (MFIRP) program, designed to enhance global research ties.
Additionally, IIT Delhi has joint degree programs with institutions like the University of Queensland (Australia) and National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan). These initiatives have led to a surge in international research publications, rising from 509 in 2018 to 1,214 in 2024.
With its latest ranking, IIT Delhi continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in engineering and technology education, reinforcing India’s presence in world-class academic and research excellence.
