Kozhikode, Kerala: The C.H. Mohammed Koya Chair for Studies on Developing Societies is conducting an International Conference on Saturday, June 28. The event will take place in the EMS Seminar Complex at the University of Calicut. The conference, titled “Reading Within and Without: Arabic-Malayalam Texts in the Indian Ocean Contexts”, will be held in collaboration with the Department of History, University of Calicut & Institute for Social Sciences, Humanities and Oceanic Research.

The conference session is part of the ongoing Arabic-Malayalam bootcamp being held at the university from 16 to 29 June 2025. These sessions are part of the Infosys Science Foundation’s Short Sabbaticals initiative for Mahmood Kooria, a prominent social scientist and historian and the 2024 Infosys Prize Laureate in Humanities and Social Sciences.

The programme registration will be held between 08.30-08.50 am at the event premises. Professor Mahmood Kooria, who has been working at the University of Edinburgh, UK since 2023, would kick-start the session, welcoming the guests and viewers.

The event, scheduled to be held till 6.30 pm, consists of various panel discussions and workshops exploring the multifaceted nature of reading, interpretation, identity formation through language, Arabic-Malayalam texts, among other matters.

An academic forum at the University of Calicut, established to honour the legacy of C.H. Mohammed Koya, the Chair holds workshops, training programmes, seminars and talks throughout the year. It aims to conduct studies and research on developing societies such as minorities, Dalits and tribes for their empowerment. The Chair also actively also actively collects and maintains valuable databases for future social projects, develops a comprehensive documentation center, and networks with similar institutions.

Beyond its research, the Chair also organises various initiatives for developing societies. These include courses, classes, seminars, study programmes, exhibitions, workshops, community gatherings, outreach activities, and cultural programs such as street plays and theatre, aside from publishing books and periodicals on the subject of social interests.
