“We are fully committed to seeing a decisive cut in migration. From today, new overseas students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK. Postgraduate research or government-funded scholarships students will be exempt,” the post reads.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak shared the post on his X platform (formerly Twitter), adding: “In 2024, we”re already delivering for the British people.”

In July 2023, the UK government made changes to the immigration rules, affecting the international students in the country. From July 17, international students were not allowed to switch to work if they had not finished the studies they enrolled for. However, the new rule prevented the students from bringing their dependents on their student visas from January 2024. hopefully, the students who are doing their postgraduate and research program can bring their dependents.
In December 2023, Prime Minister Sunak at an event in Rome, organized by the far-right organization said that “illegal migration threatens to overwhelm Europe” and he suggested that making changes for the international immigrants is necessary.
In another post on X, Sunak last month said: “Immigration is too high. Today we’re taking radical action to bring it down. These steps will make sure that immigration always benefits the UK.”
The prime minister at the Rome event had also said: “Enemies could use immigration as a weapon to deliberately drive people to our shores to try to destabilise our society.” The British prime minister has, however, said that they are already delivering for the British people in 2024.
