The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently announced that foreign medical graduates (FMGs) are required to appear for the licensing exam within ten years of course completion. Currently, there is no such time limit for appearing in the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) or the NExT. On November 22, the National Medical Commission issued a statement, providing clarifications on various issues to foreign medical graduates.
The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a national-level exam conducted twice a year. It is a mandatory screening test for Indian citizens who hold medical qualifications from other countries and plan to practice medicine in India. Meanwhile, the central government is expected to introduce the National Exit Test (NExT) by replacing FMGE soon. Apart from this, the NMC has also permitted foreign medical graduates from Ukraine to continue their studies in a different country, except India. “The Degree may however be awarded by the University to where they shall migrate,” added NMC in its statement. Such foreign medical graduates are required to avail this benefit within the next three months.
NMC also announced that they will de-recognises BS course in the Philippines, with effect from November 18. The NMC also added that foreign medical graduates who were studying a BS course or had taken admission in a BS course at the time of publication of the FMGL Regulation are not allowed. The National Medical Commission said that medical graduates who completed medical courses in foreign medical institutes in offline mode with or without one year of internship and returned to India are required to obtain provisional registration from the concerned State Medical Council. Such FMGs are also required to undergo a one-year compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI) as per CRMI Regulation 2021. They are also eligible to receive a stipend on par with Indian medical graduates.
