The National Medical Commission has been granted with World Federation For Medical Education (WFME) status, as per the press release from the Union Health Ministry. The status is granted for a tenure of 10 years.

The graduates from NMC affiliated colleges can now pursue postgraduate training and practices from other countries and can also now appear for the United State Medical Licentiate Examination (USMLE). The students can practice in countries like United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

As per the press release all the existing 706 medical colleges will be WFME accredited including the new colleges which will be set up in the coming 10 years.

“This prestigious recognition is a testament to NMC’ unwavering commitments to the highest standards in medical education and accreditation,” a commission statement said.

Now, this accreditation will make India an attractive destination for international students due to its globally recognized standards and NMC will also get a chance to enhance the quality and standards of medical education in India by aligning them with the global best practices and benchmark.

Dr Yogender Malik, Member of the Ethics and Medical Registration Board and Head Media Division at NMC on this landmark achievement said, “WFME”s recognition underscores that the quality of medical education in India adheres to global standards. This accolade empowers our students with the opportunity to pursue their careers anywhere in the world, while also making India an attractive destination for international students due to our globally recognized standards.”

The WFME recognition process entails a fee of ₹ 4,98,5142 ($60,000) per medical college which covers the expense of their travel and accommodation. This means for 706 medical colleges in India, the cost will be approximately ₹ 351.9 crore ($4,23,60,000). NMC has taken recognition of WFME which shall be applicable to all medical colleges under its umbrella, as per ANI.
