Australia on Monday announced that it would tighten its visa rule for international students and low-skilled workers. This decision would halve the country”s migrant intake over the next two years.

Under the newly implemented policies, English test will be made difficult for those seeking entry to Australia. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the migration number has to be wound back to a “sustainable level”. He added that the current system is broken. While announcing the new visa rules, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil stated that the new strategy is expected to bring the “migration numbers back to normal”.

Careful examination will be held for student’s second visa application which would prolong the stay of the students in the country.

The government has announced five key objectives for its migration strategy: raising living standards for Australians, ensuring good working conditions, and strengthening international relationships.

The motive behind conducting difficult English test is to “improve the quality of students” educational experience in Australia and to reduce potential workplace exploitation.

Meanwhile for workers opting Australia will have to obtain a new specialist visa known as the Skills and Demand Visa. This will permit the entry of high-skilled workers into the country which will combat the ongoing labour shortage in Australia.

The home minister added that the government’s reform have already put pressure on the overseas migration and will be working towards a steady deadline in the migrant numbers.

As per the data from Department of Treasury, Australia welcomed more than half million people as of June 30, 2023, which marks the highest arrival recorded in the country. Official data says that the net immigration has peaked at 510,000 in the year 2022 to 2023.
