Jamia Students Protest Against Repression, Demand Action
New Delhi, 17 February 2025: Students of Jamia Millia Islamia staged a mass protest, boycotting classes and marching to the Dean of Students’ Welfare (DSW) office to voice their concerns over alleged repression and intimidation by university authorities. The protest, marked by the slogan “Reclaim Jamia”, aimed to protect the institution’s democratic ethos and uphold student rights.
Wearing black ribbons as a symbol of defiance, the students, under the banner of United Students of Jamia, demanded the withdrawal of FIRs, suspensions, and disciplinary actions against those expressing dissent. Their memorandum also called for an end to show-cause notices, the repeal of restrictive office memoranda, and the removal of penalties for posters and graffiti.

Despite the presence of over a hundred students, university officials initially refused dialogue, allowing only one student to submit the memorandum. After sustained pressure, four representatives were finally permitted inside, though officials gave only a non-committal response.
With a 48-hour ultimatum to the administration, students have vowed to continue protesting if their demands remain unmet.
