Karnataka Education Department Recommends To Hold Open Book Exams To Improve SSLC Performance

To improve the performance of schools in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exam, the Department of School Education and Literacy, Karnataka suggested several measures concerning the mode of examination and additional measures to exams.

This year, reportedly, the SSLC result fell to 74% including grace marks of 20%, which meant the results are at only 54%. The drop in result percentage is also due to the strict action taken against the malpractice. To improve the passing percentage and students” performance the Department of School Education suggested conducting open book examinations for the students of classes 8th, 9th, and 10th. The recommendation aims to familiarise them more with the SSLC syllabus and inculcate the habit of textbook reading among the students.

The educational guidelines 2024-25, suggested conducting 25-mark question papers to be made of each section to be prepared. During the exam, students must be given a time frame to find out answers from the books. It aims to cultivate the reading habit and practice to refer to textbooks regularly. Students will understand the importance of studying textbooks, the guidelines suggest.

Among the other recommendations, the department also said to introduce surprise test which shall be self-evaluated by the children to understand the evaluation process and procedure to crack the exam. It also suggested to organise syllabus-based competitions or essay competition to learn the concepts in an interesting way.

The education department also suggested to conduct remedial classess for low achievers. The residential camps can also be set up to guide students to perform better. Under a special arrangement the top students will also sent at taluk and district level to encourage and guide other students to secure good ranks.
