The Karnataka government taking a landmark decision to promote educational empowerment among the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) students is going to increase the incentive funds for SC/ST candidates studying in top national institutes. State’s Social Welfare Minister, H C Mahadevappa made the announcement.
The incentive amount for students studying in institutes such as Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Management (IIMs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and National Institute of Technology (NITs) has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh.

The state minister said that the decision will significantly improve the academic achievements and aspirations of SC/ST students. The move will encourage students from underprivileged students to excel in their respective fields, he said.
The minister also announced a one-time aid of Rs 25 lakh for students from the SC category who achieve more than 95% marks in the Pre-University Certificate (PUC) exam and secure a management quota seat in MBBS through the NEET entrance exam. Also, SC students pursuing MBBS degrees and securing more than 60% marks in the first year of their degrees will receive an incentive of Rs 25 lakh.
Minister Mahadevappa also urged SC/ST students studying in top institutes to actively participate in nation-building and to contribute to the development of a prosperous nation.

While sharing the govt decision on social media, the state minister wrote, “We believe in the words of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, who said that an educated society is a helpful society. The government under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah continues to implement policies that uphold these principles”. The increased incentive funds are part of govt efforts to make higher education a common reality for students from marginalized communities.
