Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has secured prominent positions in the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, announced today by Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan.

NIRF Rankings 2024: Assessing IIT Bombay’s Performance

Mumbai, August 12, 2024: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has secured prominent positions in the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, announced today by Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan. The institute ranked third in the Overall category, third in Engineering, tenth in Management, fourth in Research, and achieved the top spot in the newly added ‘Innovation’ category.

The NIRF rankings, now in their ninth edition, assess institutions based on parameters including Teaching, Learning, and Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.

Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, attributed the institute’s success to the dedication and hard work of its students, faculty, and support staff. He acknowledged their contributions as the pillars of the institute and expressed his pride in their collective achievement. Prof. Kedare also emphasized the institute’s aspiration to continue improving in all fields.

“The students, faculty and support staff are the pillars of our Institute. Their dedication and hard work has helped us reach this goal. I congratulate all the students, faculty and staff of IIT Bombay for this achievement. We aspire to improve ourselves further in all fields,” Prof Kedare said.

Comparing this year’s performance with the previous year, IIT Bombay maintained its rank of third in Engineering and tenth in Management. However, it improved from fourth to third in the Overall category and retained its fourth position in Research. The institute also made a significant leap from seventh to first in the ‘Innovation’ category, which was introduced in the rankings last year.

IIT Bombay, established in 1958 as the second IIT, is recognized globally as a leader in engineering education and research. In 2018, it was granted the status of ‘Institution of Eminence’ by the Ministry of Education, a testament to its excellence. The institute boasts 17 academic departments, 36 specialized centres and programmes, three schools, and three interdisciplinary programmes. Over 70,000 engineers and scientists have graduated from IIT Bombay over the past six decades, contributing to its reputation for producing high-calibre professionals.

With more than 715 faculty members who are acclaimed both nationally and internationally, IIT Bombay continues to set benchmarks in education and research. The institute’s global standing was further cemented when it was ranked first in India and 118th in the world in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2025, released earlier this year.
