No Physical Classes In Delhi Except Classes 10 And 12, Delhi Under GRAP-4

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi announced the closing of physical classes in Delhi schools for all except for the students of classes 10 and 12. The decision came amidst the alarming level of air pollution in the capital. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked strict pollution control measures in Delhi-NCR under stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

While sharing the decision to close schools, the Delhi CM writes on social media ‘X’.

The Delhi government enforced the new restrictions after the air quality fell to the ‘severe plus’ category. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) data, Delhi’s Air Quality (AQI) has reached 481. Out of the 35 monitoring stations in the national capital, the AQI recorded more than 400 at most places, with Dwarka being the highest with 499.

Due to a dense blanket of smog, the visibility plunged to 150 meters. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for ‘dense fog’.

Under the eight-point, GRAP-4 action plan several measures are taken including,

  • A ban on the entry of diesel-powered medium and heavy vehicles (BS-IV and below) in Delhi except those transporting essential goods and providing emergency services.
  • Construction and demolition activities such as building roads and highways and flyovers are restricted except for critical infrastructure such as metro rail, railways, hospitals, and defense projects.
