Oxford Retains Top Spot In THE World University Rankings 2025
In the 8th consecutive year, the University of Oxford secures the top rank in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025. MIT, Princeton, Harvard, and the University of Cambridge secured ranks among the top five spots in the annual university ranking.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025 evaluates research-intensive universities on five parameters including teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry income. The ranking uses 18 performance indicators such as teaching reputation, staff-to-student ratio, research output, citation impact, and international collaboration.

This year some notable changes were observed in the university ranking. While the University of Oxford retained its position, other top universities’ ranking was changed. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) climbed to second place replacing Standford University which dropped out of the top five this year. Harvard University moved up to third place from its earlier fourth place while Princeton University made its entry into the prestigious top five by securing the fourth spot. The University of Cambridge retained its 5th spot.
