Prof Shireesh Kedare Appointed IIT Bombay Director

]Prof. Shireesh Kedare, a professor in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, has been appointed as the new Director of the Institute. Prof Kedare will take charge as the the director of the prestigious technological, scientific and research institute in May.

“We are happy to announce that Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Professor in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, has been appointed as the new Director of IIT Bombay! He will assume charge as Director on May 6, 2024,” a statement from the Institute said.

Professor Shireesh Kedare is a distinguished figure in the field of renewable energy, particularly renowned for his expertise in concentrating and non-concentrating solar technologies coupled with thermal energy storage. His multifaceted research interests encompass a wide array of applications, ranging from industrial process heat and space cooling to power generation and decentralized solutions for cooking, drying, and desalination. With a keen focus on the decarbonization of Indian industries and the power sector, Prof Kedare is dedicated to exploring renewable energy technologies as pivotal components of sustainable development initiatives.

Currently serving as the Professor-in-charge at the Centre of Excellence in Oil, Gas, and Energy at IIT Bombay, Prof Kedare brings a wealth of experience to his role. His contributions extend beyond academia, as evidenced by his involvement in various advisory and governing bodies. Notably, he holds positions such as a Member of the Board of Governors at IIT Madras and a Nominated Member of the Council of IITs under the Ministry of Education.

Prof Kedare’s influence extends to the industrial sphere, where he serves as an Expert Member on the Research Advisory Council of NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA), NTPC Ltd. India. Additionally, his expertise is sought after in governmental and organizational settings, as indicated by his roles as an Expert Member on the Khadi Village and Industries Commission (KVIC) and a Nominee on the Advisory Board for SNDT University, Mumbai.

Throughout his career, Prof Kedare has been deeply engaged in fostering academic and technological advancements. He has played pivotal roles in guiding research projects, supervising dissertations, and delivering over 100 invited lectures. His commitment to education is evident in the numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses he has conducted at IIT Bombay, along with the development of laboratory facilities and test setups to facilitate hands-on learning experiences.
