The newly edited NCERT class 8 social science book ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond’ has caught attention once again over the changes made under the New Education Policy – 2020. Rajender Rathore, an ex-MLA from Rajasthan, has written to the Union Education Minister, objecting to a map depicting the 1759 expansion of the Maratha Empire.

The controversial map mentioned by the ex-opposition leader in class 8 textbooks represented many independent and sovereign princely states, including Mewar, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Bundi, Alwar, Dhaulpur, and Baratpur, among other states, under the Maratha empire. To this, he objected to the map calling as being wrongly shown.

The letter addressed to Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted that the historical evidence suggests the independent existence of the Rajasthan territory and they were never been a part of the Maratha.

The wrong depiction of the princely states has hurt the sentiments of the people of Rajasthan and created wrong knowledge among students, he wrote.

“The land of Rajasthan is recognised widely for the stories of bravery and valor of its fighters, Rajendera Rathore wrote, mentioning Rana Kumbha, Rana Sanga, Maharana Pratap, Rav Chandrasen Rathore, Vir Durgadas Rathore, and Maharaja Surajmal, who sacrificed their lives while protecting their motherland.
