The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after marathon deliberation announced its candidate list, hoping to retain the power and to cross the stated 400 seats for the saron camp, National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Though the list saw several new faces, many incumbents were also given tickets. For Dewas Lok Sabha constituency, the party decided to field incumbent MP Mahendra Singh Solanki. He was first elected in 2019.
Born in 1984 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Mr Solanki started his political career by becoming a volunteer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) early in childhood. He has participated in many ideological movements of the RSS. He obtained a law degree and registered as an advocate in the state Advocate Council, Jabalpur.
He has worked as an additional District Public Prosecutor in Ujjain District Court in addition to serving as a judge in district-level courts from July 2010 to December 2018. However, with the BJP giving him the ticket for the second consecutive term, the party expresses its confidence in Mr Solanki who secured more than three lakh majority in his debut against Congress’s Prahlad Singh Tipanya during the 2019 general election.
Being one of the aggressive nationalists, he has also been known for controversial remarks. In 2021, while addressing an event of the Mewada community programme at Ashta village in Sehore, the BJP MP said that India will eventually be left with two communities – nationalists and traitors. The remark was viewed by many as a veiled reference against Muslims.
After the party announced his name, supporters celebrated the 39-year-old Solanki’s second candidature. Mr Solanki took to his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “heartfelt gratitude. I have a close relationship with the Dewas-Shajapur Lok Sabha seat, the people here have given me the privilege of electing me once and serving as MP. Once again, the party has allowed me to serve this very family.”
