BJP gave ticket to Samir Oraon from Lohardaga Lok Sabha constituency in Jharkhand for the upcoming general election. Oraon is Rajya Sabha MP and National President of BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha. He got elected to the Rajya Sabha by getting 27 first preference votes out of the total 78 votes. Samir Oraon also joined the campaign of countering Lalu Prasad Yadav’s “family jibe” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The campaign was named as “Modi Ka Parivar”.
Amidst the protest from some tribal groups over the introduction of Uniform Civil Code in the state, Samir Oraon voiced his confidence that the community will continue to get special rights.
Talking about the introduction of Uniform Civil Code, he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upliftment of the communities belonging to Schedules Tribes, and said that the Prime Minister will ensure that special laws made for the ST category will not be abolished.
Advocating for the Uniform Civil Code, the National President of Scheduled Tribes said that the tribal communities should not be misled by the critics of the bill, and that such bills are introduced as an effort to bring the tribal communities into the mainstream of the society. Samir Oraon argued that the tribal communities and tribal areas have special rights under the fifth and sixth Schedule of the constitution, and that it was necessary to the tribal communities privileges they deserv, as reported by media.
Meanwhile, the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha seats from the state of Jharkhand will take place on March 21. Samir Oraon and Congress’ MP Diraj Prasad will complete their tenure on May 3, calling for the new election.
