The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Topon Kumar Gogoi, is looking for a second consecutive victory in the upcoming general elections. Topon Kumar Gogoi is all set to contest in Assam”s Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency.
Topon Kumar Gogoi, who joined active politics in 2016, is currently serving as an MP from Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency. He was the former leader of the All Assam Students” Union (AASU). In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Topon Kumar Gogoi defeated Indian National Congress candidate Sushanta Borgohain. While the BJP leader secured a total of 5,43,288 votes, Sushanta Borgohain managed to get only 4,60,635 votes.
The Congress party had considerable influence in the Jorhat constituency for a long time. However, the political climate of the constituency changed after BJP leader Kamakhya Prasad Tasa defeated six-time Congress MP and former Union minister late Bijoy Krishna Handique in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
In the 2016 Assam Assembly polls, Topon Kumar Gogoi contested from the Sonari constituency. He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly by defeating Congress candidate Sarat Barkataky by a margin of 24,117 votes. Topon Kumar Gogoi got 73327 votes in that election, and the Congress candidate managed to secure only 49210 votes. Topon Kumar Gogoi also took charge as minister of the Power Department shortly after.
On February 21, Topon Kumar Gogoi fractured his leg after he slipped and fell during an event. According to a Times of India report, the incident happened during a foundation stone laying event at Rupohimukh in Sivasagar district.
