In the 90-assembly constituent poll, Charan Das contested against the BJP leader Dr. Khilawan Sahu. He first won his seat in 2018 and has also served as a three-term Lok Sabha MP and Union Minister of State.

Charan Das Mahant tweeted after making his thumping win in the constituency, “Heartfelt gratitude to the great people of Sakti..  I express my gratitude to the people for the blessings and strength of my ancestors. This victory is the victory of my home village, the victory of the party workers”.

As per the current trend, BJP is leading in 54 seats and Congress in 35. The results are coming out in contrast to the exit polls which predicted a clear sweep of all seats for Congress. Though, the initial trends in the beginning favoured Congress, the trends took a swift turn.

Charan Das Mahant is known for his contribution to tribal rights. He formulated action plans and events to uplift the tribal community, creating platforms for folk art, including drama, dance and songs. Unfortunately, he faced loss in the 2018 election.
