Choudhary Mohammed Akram, an independent candidate, has won from the Surankote Assembly constituency defeating Congress’ Mohd Shahnawaz. Akram, a former MLA from the Surankode constituency representing the Congress party, was polled 34,201 won by a margin of 8,851 votes. Shannawaz was polled 25,350 votes. BJP’s Mushtaq Ahmed Shah Bukhari came third.
Akram, who had won the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election, before the bifurcation of the state, is from Lassana, Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir. He polled 30,584 votes and defeated his nearest rival, Mushtaq Ahmed Shah of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference with a margin of 8,064 votes.

Voting in Jammu and Kashmir took place in three phases, September 18, September 25, and October 1. The date of voting in Surankote was September 25 Phase 2.
The elections in Jammu and Kashmir took place after a gap of 10 years since 2014. However, no change took place in people’s choices in Surankote when it comes to the selection of candidates.
