“My Dear Sisters And Brother Of Wayanad…”: Priyanka Gandhi

Ahead of the by-poll in the Wayanad district of Kerala, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra penned a heartfelt letter to the people of Wayanad addressing them to be her “dear sisters and brothers.”

Priyanka Gandhi has been named as the candidate for Wayanad after the leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat for Rae Bareli, a Gandhi bastion that has been represented by Sonia Gandhi for the past four terms.

The letter began as the Congress leader reflected on her recent visit to Chooramala and Mundakkai, sharing her experience witnessing the devastating plight of the landslide-affected natives. She also highlighted the remarkable resilience displayed by the people in the face of the tragedy. “You rallied together with the strength I have not seen before. Doctors, public representatives, volunteers, social workers, teachers, nurses, housewives, everyone was doing whatever they possibly could do help one another. None was resorting to pettiness or greed,” she wrote.

Priyanka Gandhi further added that it was indeed an honour to represent the people of Wayanad in Parliament. “It would be an honour to learn from you, to understand your lives and the challenge you face and to become part of this courageous community that knows how to respect each other and stand tall even in the most-trying times.”

In the letter, she also acknowledged the deep bond the people of Wayanad shared with her brother, Rahul Gandhi who had represented the constituency in the Parliament.

“You have given my brother your love, and I know he reciprocates it fully”. She had conveyed Rahul Gandhi’s concern over issues including challenges of the farming and tribal communities.

She emphasized that she would make sure that the women of the Wayanad get enough opportunities to strengthen the future.
