Indian National Congress has fielded leader Roselina Tirkey as the candidate from Kaziranga parliamentary constituency. Hailing from Soriakhat village in Golaghat district, 42-year-old Tirkey was included in the second list of the Congress candidate list.

The newly created Kaziranga Lok Sabha seat will see a one-to-one contest between two tea tribe leaders fielded by the BJP and Congress. The seat along with four other constituencies will go to the poll on April 19.

In the 2016 assembly election, Tirkey was selected to the Assam legislative assembly from Sarupathar constituency defeating Binod Gowalla of Asom Gana Parishad with a margin of 2,927 votes. She has earlier served as the vice chairperson of Golaghat Zila Parishad from 2007 to 2012. She has also held a position as a member of the Morangi Zila Parishad constituency from 2012 to 2016.

As for her educational qualification, Tirkey completed her education in BCA from Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Mass Communication. She later then took MBA from the Indian Institute of Planning and Management in 2006.

Tirkey got the candidature from the constituency as sitting MP of the erstwhile Kaliabor seat Gaurav Gogoi has shifted to Jorhat after Kaliabor was recreated as Kaziranga constituency during the delimitation exercise.

Both parties have expressed their confidence in winning the seat, but according to the political analyst the demographic change after the delimitation is expected to help the saffron party. And that’s why Congress decided to shift Jorhat as the party has lost its support base after the delimitation.

Tirkey after being chosen as the candidate said that there is an acceptance of the Congress across the constituency, even though it has been recreated including and excluding several assembly segments during the delimitation, and the party is hopeful to win it.
