TMC Ex-MLA Silbhadra Datta To Contest On BJP Ticket From Dum Dum

Silabhadra Dutta will contest the Dum Dum constituency seat from West Bengal on a BJP ticket. The Dum Dum constituency will see elections on June 1, 2024, in phase 7. TMC has nominated Prof Saugata Roy from West Bengal’s Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In 2020, the MLA Silabhadra Dutta resigned from TMC and joined BJP. However, the two time MLA resigned from the party but did not abandoned the legislature seat. Arguably, Dutta was not happy with the party leadership and internal party affairs. The 62-year-old BJP candidate is an advocate by profession and possesses a total assets of Rs 1.2 crore. He has two criminal cases recroded in his name.

The Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency remained a Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) stronghold for several years with Congress winning in 1984 and BJP won in 1998 till 2004. TMC won the seat for the first time in 2009, with Prof Saugata Roy securing 4.5 lakh votes. Mr. Roy continued to retain the seat in the subsequent Lok Sabha elections with a significant majority. With 5.1 lakh votes, the sitting Member of Parliament for the Congress won the 2019 election.

With 4.5 lakh votes, the BJP”s nominee Samik Bhattacharya rose from the first to the second place. Under the TMC banner, the Vidhan Sabhas regions include Rajarhat Gopalpur, Panihati, Khardaha, Kamarhati, Dum Dum Uttar, and Baranagar constitute the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency.

According to the 2011 census, there are 2.5 percent voters in the constituency who are Muslims, 21.7 percent who are SC, and 2.6% of voters overall.
