BJP candidate Sukanta Majumdar won the Lok Sabha Election 2024 from the Balurghat Lok Sabha constituency with a 10,386 vote margin. The Trinamool Congress candidate Biplab Mitra secured second place in Balurghat.
Sukanta Majumdar the 10th state president of BJP, West Bengal was fielded against TMC Biplab Mitra. Majumdar is a professor at the University of Gour Banga and obtained a PhD degree in Botany from the University of North Bengal. Majumdar has long been associated with the RSS and defeated Arpita Ghosh of TMC in Balurghat with a margin of 33,293 votes, who won the 2014 elections from the constituency.
A long-time member of the RSS, Majumdar defeated TMC candidate Arpita Ghosh in Balurghat by a margin of 33,293 votes, and Ghosh went on to win the 2014 elections from the constituency.
From 1977 to 2014 the Balurghat Lok Sabha seat was dominated by the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP). In 2014, the TMC candidate Arpita Ghosh secured 38.53% votes and won the seat. Bimalendu Sarkar of RSP won 28.47% votes and BJP candidate Bishwapriya Roychowdhury secured 20.98% of votes to be in the second and third positions respectively.
In 2019, Sukanta Majumdar secured the Balurghat Lok Sabha constituency with 45.02% votes on the BJP ticket and secured the saffron party’s success on the seat. Whereas, the Arpital Ghosh of TMC losing its seat to the BJP secured 42.24 percent votes. The RSP candidate Ranen Barman secured only 6.09 percent votes.
