BJP candidate Shantanu Thakur won the Lok Sabha Election 2024 from the Bangaon Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 73,693 votes. The Trinamool Congress party candidate Biswajit Das secured second place in the Bangaon constituency.
Shantanu Thakur has been a Member of Lok Sabha for Bangaon since 2019. He took the charge of Union Minister of State, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways on 7 July 2021. Since its delimitation, Mr Thakur became the first non-TMC MP to be elected from Bangaon constituency. Shantanu Thakur is the son of ex-Bengal Minister Manjul Krishna Thakur, the leader of All India Matua Mahasangha
Bangaon since 2009 has been won by the TMC candidates and in 2019 BJP took over the seat. In 2019, Shantanu Thakur from BJP secured 48.85% votes while TMC candidate Mamata Thakur secured 40.92% votes. The CPI (M) candidate Alakesh Das secured 6.40 percent votes.
In 2014, TMC candidate Kapil Krishna Thakur scored 42.94% votes and won the Bangaon Lok Sabha seat, whereas the CPI (M) candidate Debesh Das secured 31.52% votes and got second place. The BJP candidate K. D. Biswas secured 19.07% votes in the 2014 general elections.
