The Silchar Lok Sabha constituency has witnessed the historic win of Parimal Suklabaidya as he has secured 6,52,405 votes surpassing the previous record created by Rajdeep Roy in 2019.
With Parimal Suklabaidya’s win, BJP had built a stronghold in the constituency as the candidate had secured 6,52,405 votes, and the opponent candidate Surya Kanta Sarkar of Congress had bagged 3,88,094 votes.
Parimal Suklabaidya marked his political entry through the Assam Legislative Assembly election in 1991, where he was fielded against Kamakhya of the Assam Gona Parishad party, eventually, he won the election with a margin of 16,312 votes. As he lost the 1996 assembly polls, he made his significant comeback in the Dholai assembly constituency in 2001 and 2006.
As the Dolai assembly constituency had witnessed his every political move, he again lost the 2011 assembly polls, as Girindra Malik of Congress conquered the seat. He again became an MLA from the same seat in the next election. He also became a minister in the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government in 2016.
The incumbent minister of the Himanta Biswas-led Assam government had been elected for the fourth time from the Dholai legislative assembly constituency, which is a part of Silchar. He is also a five-time MLA of the Dholai constituency. He had extended his expertise in major portfolios including transport, Fisheries, and Excise in the Assam government. Pramil Suklabadiya again marked his victory, as he won the 2021 assembly polls in the Dholai constituency.
Silchar constituency of Assam has always been a battleground of the major parties BJP and Congress all these years, as it witnessed a democratic shift between both parties since 1991. Through this election, Parimal Suklabaidya has created a new record surpassing Rajdeep Roy of the BJP who grabbed the seat with 4,99,414 votes, where he contested against Sushmita Dev of Congress who bagged 4,17,818 votes.
