BJP's Nitin Gadkari Wins From Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency

BJP candidate Nitin Gadkari won from the Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency by securing 655,027 votes. He won by defeating Congress candidate Vikas Thakre with a vote margin of137,603 votes.

Road transport and Highway minister and veteran BJP leader Nitin Gadkari who is popularly known as ‘the highway man of India’ has contested from the constituency three times. He is one of the longest serving minister of the PM-Modi led BJP government since he took the office in 2014. Besides being a union minister, he has also handled the role of leader of opposition in the Maharashtra legislative council.

Congress’s candidate Vikas Thakre is the Nagpur Congress president as well as the member of the legislative assembly representing Nagpur west constituency. He has earlier served as the Nagpur mayor.

Nagpur, Maharashtra’s second capital was once a stronghold of Congress. Aside from Banwarilal Purohit’s victory in 1996, the saffron party failed to make progress in the constituency.

Titled as ‘zero luck’ to the saffron party, got a sudden lease of life in Modi’s wave in 2014 general elections.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Nitin Gadkari won the seat by securing 587,767 votes, while Congress’ Vilas Muttemwar stood second receiving 302,919 votes.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election too, union minister Nitin Gadkari was able to retain the seat by receiving 660,221 votes. Congress’ Nana Falgunrao came second with 444,212 votes.
