As wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat are set to join Congress today, Sakshi Malik, an Olympic wrestler who was part of the protest against former Lok Sabha MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, whom they accused of sexual assault, said the decision is their ‘personal choice.’
“…It is their personal choice to join the party. I believe that we should make sacrifices. Our agitation, the fight for women should not be given a wrong impression…From my end, the agitation continues…I too had received offers but I wanted to see what I started till the end. Unless the Federation is cleaned and the exploitation of women ends, my fight will continue…The fight is genuine and it will continue…” said Malik, as quoted by ANI.

I will always be grateful to the Indian Railway family for this opportunity given to me by the Railways in the service of the nation.”

Both Phogat and Punia visited the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge amid speculations of the Indian wrestlers joining the party. On Wednesday, the two met with Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Their meeting coincided with the Congress’ Central Election Committee (CEC) finalising its list of candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections.
Phogat is expected to contest from the Julana seat presently held by the Jannayak Janta Party’s Amarjeet Dhanda. An official confirmation is expected to be made soon.
