Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat visited the Shambhu border today to meet the protesting farmers, and there she was asked if she would contest Haryana elections, if Congress offers her ticket. Speculation is rife that the wrestler, who was part of protests in Delhi last year against then BJP MP Brijbhushan Singh alleging sexual harassment, might contest the ensuing Haryana assembly elections.
Vinesh Phogat said: “I will not speak on this, I will not talk about politics. I have come to my family. If you talk about this, you would waste their struggle and fight. The focus is not on me today. The focus should be on the farmers, I request this. I am an athlete, I belong to the entire country. I have nothing to do with which state is going to the polls. All I know is that my country is suffering, farmers are in trouble. Their issues should be resolved and it should be the first priority of the Government to resolve this”.

Farmers at the Shambu border marked the 200th day of their ongoing protest on Saturday with a large gathering. The Indian ace wrestler joined the group pledging her solidarity.
Farmers have been stationed at the Shambu border since February 13, after authorities prevented their march to Delhi. The protesters had demanded a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops, among other key issues.
Vinesh Phogat in her speech at the Shambhu border expressed her admiration for the farmers, acknowledging that they have been sitting there for a long time, fighting for their rights, but their energy and determination have not diminished.
She also shared her pride in being born into a farmer’s family and assured the protestors that she stands with them as their daughter.

Farmers leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the protest is being conducted peacefully but with great intensity. He mentioned that the Centre is testing its resolve, and its demands have not yet been met.
While speaking to India Today TV, he said that they will represent their demands to the government once again and the new announcements will also be made.
