Will BJP Candidate Rudra Narayan Pany Get Success In Dhenkanal After Multiple Failures In LS Polls?

The BJP MP Rudra Narayan Pany has secured the party ticket again to run for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the Dhenkanal Lok Sabha constituency. The voting date for the Dhenkanal Lok Sabha constituency is May 25 (Phase 6). Biju Janata Dal (BJD) fielded Abinash Samal against Pany in Dhenkanal.

Pany declared his educational qualification as BA and a total income of 36 lakh. Pany entered politics in 1991 as a BJP candidate. Saffron party has given him the ticket to run elections in 1991, 1996, 2009, 2014, and 2019 but Dhenkanal did not allow him to serve the constituency. In 1999, he fought elections as an independent candidate but could not win. In 2006, Rudra Narayan Pany was elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Dhenkanal Lok Sabha constituency is comprised of Dhenkanal, Hindol, Kamakhyanagar, Parjanga, Pallahara, Talcher and Angul. The constituency is a BJD stronghold as all the assembly seats in Dhenkanal are occupied by the Naveen Patnaik party. In the last general elections in 2019, BJD candidate Mahesh Sahoo secured 46.21% votes defeating BJP candidate Rudra Narayan Pani.

Notably, the BJP reflected a remarkable shift in vote gain in 2019 in comparison to 2014. In 2014, the party secured 30.32% of votes while in 2019 its vote share reached 43.08%.

Dhenkar is a general category seat comprised of Angul district and Dhenkar district. The literacy rate in the constituency is 69.02%. The total SC, ST, and Muslim populations in the constituency are 19.26%, 13.84%, and 1.4% respectively.
