The Kerala Chalachitra Academy, that organizes the awards, has confirmed that the jury will conduct the final screenings of the shortlisted films before announcing the winners on August 16. The jury is led by renowned director Sudhir Mishra.
The announcement of the award could be late if the jury decides to watch any of the movies one more time, officials said.
Malayalam film industry is on its spectacular phase. The competition is fierce this year with ‘Aadujeevitham’, ‘Kaathal: The Core’, and Urvashi’s ‘Ullozhukku’ emerging as top contenders.

When Prithviraj stunned the audience as Najeeb in ‘Aadujeevitham,’ Mammootty’s portrayal of Mathew in ‘Kaathal-The Core’ and police officer George in ‘Kannur Squad’ is equally at the top notch. Mammootty was the winner of the award last time for ‘Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam’.
Adding the element of unpredictability, speculations are running wild that any unreleased films may also be considered for the award.
It was tight-knit competition this year, with a total of 160 films submitted for consideration. Interestingly, many of these entries have yet to be released. Another notable factor is that 84 of the submitted films are the works of debutant directors.
