The laity commission secretary of the Syro-Malabar Sabha Almaya Forum filed a complaint against the upcoming Malayalam movie “Bougainvillea” on Monday for allegedly distorting Christian beliefs through its song “Sthuthi”. Forum Secretary Tony Chittilappilly sent a mail to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav seeking strict laws to ban songs which are said to be insulting Christian beliefs. The complaint demands censorship of the song and potentially the entire film.
The song lyrics come like this:
Bhoolokam Srishticha Karthavinu Sthuthi
• ”Praises to the Creator of the Earth”
Premathe Srishticha Karthavine Sthuthi
• ”Praises to the Lover who created the Universe”
Poonkaadum Poonthennalum Pulmedum Vaanavum
• ”With flowers, with fragrance, with verdant gardens and with the sky”
Ninne-Yum Srishticha Karthavinu Sthuthi
• ”Forever, praises to the Creator of the Universe”
Since the song carries devotional yet interpretational meanings the complaint says that God (Jesus Christ) could be perceived as inconsistent with traditional Christian views of God as a Trinity, rather than a romantic partner. It further alleged that the entire song insults Christian beliefs and tarnishes the sacredness of the community. However, the song is already trending with more than 2.7 million views on YouTube and other social media platforms.
“Bougainvillea” is directed by Amal Neerad and produced by Jyotirmayi and Kunchacko Boban under Amal Neerad Productions and Udaya Pictures. The movie features an ensemble cast, including Jyotirmayi’s return to screen after a long hiatus, Kunchako Boban, Fahad Fazil, and others. The song “Sthuti” praises the Lord who created the world, but the forum claims it insults Christian beliefs.
This is Amal Neerad and Fahadh Faasil’s third collaboration after Malayalam movies Varathan and Iyyobinte Pusthakam. Kunchacko Boban and Fahad Fazil also reunite after their previous film Take Off. The script is written by Lajo Jose and Amal Neerad with music by Sushin Shyam and lyrics by Vinayak Sasikumar.
