Here is the story of director Adhik Ravichandran delivering a mass entertainer as a pure fanboy of actor Ajith.
Introducing Director Adhik Ravichandran
Adhik Ravichandran, the son of veteran assistant director Ravichandran “Ravi” Kandaswamy, started his journey as an assistant director, under filmmaker Major Ravi, known for films like Picket 43 (2015), Oru Yathrayil (2013), Karma Yodha (2012) and others.
The young filmmaker, who etched his name among the prominent filmmakers of Tamil cinema, made his directorial debut in 2015 with the comedy entertainer Trisha Illana Nayanthara (2015). The director tried to capture the attention of the young audience and succeeded in his mission by delivering a blockbuster adult comedy film portraying GV Prakash in the lead.
However, his next few films, like Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan (AAA) (2017) with STR and Bagheeraa (2023), failed to create an impact and turned out to be box office bombs.
The Transformation
The directorial journey of Adhik underwent a transformation in 2023 with his sci-fi comedy entertainer Mark Antony (2023), starring Vishal and SJ Suriyah in the lead. The director credits Ajith Kumar for this massive transformation. But why? Here is an interesting story.
Adhik revealed that before meeting AK, he made movies just for the sake of survival; he admitted that there was no passion in making films. But Ajith ignited the responsibility in Adhik, as he said, “Don’t make movies for a particular group.” And that’s what paved the way for the blockbuster Mark Antony.
Adhik, the Fanboy Director of Good Bad Ugly
Being a die-hard fan of Ajith, Adhik also realised his responsibility to deliver a hardcore entertainer. He said that he approached the film with the perfect blend of fanboy writer and committed director.
He revealed that even though he wrote the script as a fan who celebrates his idol, he prevented himself from being one while directing the film. Thus, GBU would be a film filled with nostalgia and fan moments, offering a full-fledged celebration of Ajith Kumar, the actor.
GBU: Exploring Ajith as an artist
Despite the presence of nostalgic elements, the trailer of GBU set itself apart from the usual entertainers of Ajith. And it is evident that director Adhik took up his chance to experiment with the actor in the film. Whether it is costumes, dialogues, characterisation or screenplay, Adhik has tried to portray the actor in a different light, which has not been explored in Ajith’s career.
He has also added his signature cinematography touch by presenting the screenplay in warm, vibrant lighting, which is unusual in Ajith films.
