KFCC Bans 'Thug Life' Release In Karnataka; Demands Apology From Kamal Haasan
Actor Kamal Haasan’s upcoming gangster film, Thug Life, is facing a ban in Karnataka, followed by his controversial statement over the Kannada language. While his comment sparked outrage among Kannada groups and language activists, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has demanded a public apology from the actor.
The KFCC on May 30 announced that the chamber has decided to ban the release of Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, in the state, supporting Kannada organisations’ demand for an apology.
While addressing the media in Bangalore, Sa Ra Govind, a representative of KFCC, confirmed the ban stating that the chamber stood in solidarity with the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and other Kannada organisations.

He also said that there was no mention of an apology from Kamal Haasan and that they will not allow the film to release in Karnataka until he apologises publicly.
The controversy escalated with protests erupting near INOX cinema hall in Belagavi, organized by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike. Protesters demanded the actor retract his statement, which they believe deeply insulted the Kannada language and its cultural heritage.
Amidst their demand for a boycott, Kamal Haasan made it clear that he will never apologise until he is proven wrong. While addressing the media, he said, “It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it, except for those who have an agenda.”

Kamal Haasan has been facing intense backlash for his statement, with many criticising the actor for his remark. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddharamaiah called out the actor’s ‘ignorance’ of Kannada’s rich history. “Kannada has a long-standing history. Poor Kamal Haasan, he is unaware of it,” Siddharamaiah said.
The controversy stemmed from a remark he made during a promotional event of Thug Life in Chennai, which Kannada star Shivarajkumar graced. While addressing fans, the Indian 2 actor referred to the Kannada actor and said, “Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil, so you too are included in that line.”
Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life is scheduled to hit theatres on June 5. The film will release in multiple languages, such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
